Title: Divergent Author: Veronica Roth Genre: Dystopian fiction  Dystopian fiction focuses on a futuristic society with many negative elements (for example, government corruption, wars, disease, poor living conditions, etc.) Setting: futuristic Chicago

Main Characters: Beatrice (Tris)—16 year old girl who must choose between staying loyal to her family or making her own choices by selecting a new faction. Caleb—Beatrice’s brother who faces the same challenge. Four—Beatrice’s new friend in the Dauntless faction. Eric—leader of the Dauntless faction. Christina, Uriah, Peter, Al, Molly, Edward, and Myra— others who go through initiation for the Dauntless faction.

Beatrice (Tris) Prior must select a new faction, or group, to join after her sixteenth birthday. She must decide between living as a member of Abnegation with the rest of her family or become who she truly is by picking a new faction. Once Beatrice makes her choice, she must complete a difficult initiation process. Along the way, she makes new friends, but she must hide an important secret about her true self or face severe consequences.

Tris experiences an internal conflict—should she stay with her family and current faction or should she make her own choice and leave to find her true self? Tris struggles to be accepted into the Dauntless faction by completing dangerous tasks. Theme: be true to yourself.

Page 22: Tris completes her aptitude test to determine in what faction she belongs. She finds out a dangerous secret. Page 254: Tris undergoes a scary simulation. Four discovers her dangerous secret.

YES!!! This book is fast-paced and you keep reading to find out what happens to Tris and how she will survive when her secret is discovered. If you liked The Hunger Games trilogy, you will enjoy reading the Divergent trilogy, as well.
