3. Classifying Reactions 11.2 3. Classifying Reactions The six general types of reaction are combination (synthesis), decomposition, single-replacement, double-replacement, acid-base, and combustion. Combination Reactions A combination reaction is a chemical change in which two or more substances react to form a single new substance. Decomposition Reactions A decomposition reaction is a chemical change in which a single compound breaks down into two or more simpler products. Single-Replacement Reactions A single-replacement reaction is a chemical change in which one element replaces a second element in a compound.

A reactive metal will replace any metal listed below it in the activity series. Thus, iron will displace copper from a copper compound in solution, but iron does not similarly displace zinc or calcium. A halogen can also replace another halogen from a compound

Double-Replacement Reactions A double-replacement reaction is a chemical change involving an exchange of positive ions between two compounds. Acid-Base Reactions An acid-base reaction is a type of double- replacement reaction in which an acid and a base react in an aqueous solution Combustion Reactions A combustion reaction is a chemical change in which an element or a compound reacts with oxygen, often producing energy in the form of heat and light. Aqueous solutions of potassium carbonate and barium chloride react in a double-replacement reaction to form the white precipitate barium carbonate. Potassium chloride, the other product of the reaction, remains in solution.

4. Predicting the Products of a Chemical Reaction 11.2 The number of elements and/or compounds reacting is a good indicator of possible reaction type and thus possible products. In a combination (synthesis) reaction, two or more reactants (elements or compounds) combine to form a single product. In a decomposition reaction, a single compound is the reactant; two or more substances are produced In a single-replacement reaction, an element and a compound are the reactants, a new compound and different element are the products

Predicting the Products of a Chemical Reaction In a double-replacement reaction, two ionic compounds are the reactants, two new compounds are the products In an acid-base reaction, an acid and a base react to create a new product and water In a combustion reaction the reactants are usually oxygen and a hydrocarbon, the products are carbon dioxide and water
