1 Chemical REactions

2 Chemical Reactions Process that changes substances into different substances The Atoms are rearranged in a chemical reaction

3 5 main Types of Chemical Reactions
Synthesis Decomposition Single Displacement Double Displacement Combustion

4 Synthesis Reaction Two Elements join to form one compound
If it’s synthesis, write a compound that contains both elements. (Remember to balance the charges if it’s ionic)

5 Decomposition Reaction
A compound breaks down into smaller forms If it’s Decomposition, you start with the element (the product) after the reaction, the (reactants) compound is broken down into smaller forms

6 Single Displacement An element reacts with a compound to form a new element and a different compound. The reactant element “ displaces” an element in the compound that is more chemically similar. For example a metal will replace a different metal An example is  Zn(s) + Cu(NO3)2(aq)    Cu(s) + Zn(NO3)2(aq) Note that the zinc metal takes the place of the copper ion in the compound. Zinc is more similar to copper than to nitrogen or oxygen. An element displaces (replaces) part of a compound-Only if it is more reactive.

7 Double Displacement During double replacement, the cations and anions of two different compounds switch places. The elements of compounds displace (replace) each other in the compounds. Example: Silver (Ag) and Potassium (K) switch places And so in the reactant, Potassium bonds with Nitrate (NO3) To form Potassium Nitride and Silver (Ag) bonds with Chlorine To form Silver Cloride. AgNO3(Aq) + KCl(Aq) --> KNO3(Aq) + AgCl(s)

8 Combustion . Good signsthat you are dealing with a combustion reaction include the presence of oxygen as a reactant and carbon dioxide, water and heat as products Combustion usually occurs when a hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. CxHy+o2  Co2 + H2o Combustion of Methane to make Carbon dioxide and water
