Tips to help you sort the junk from the gems… Purpose of website URLs Usefulness Using critical thinking

Purpose… Why was the website created? It could be: Commercial Informative Educational Entertaining Personal Institutional

URLs… The URL will give you an idea of the purpose of the website….ac.html.co.org.govt

Is the website useful for your task? Consider: Accessibility (easy to understand?) Clarity (easy to read?) Responsibility (eg, can you contact the authors?) Authority (is the author qualified in the field?) Objectivity (is it biased?) Appropriateness (is it at the right level for your studies?) Currency (is it up to date?)

Critical thinking… Don’t believe everything you see on the internet! Always consider how reliable a site is… Use you thinking skills to evaluate the website… Ask questions of a website before you use it in your studies…
