History is the written and other recorded events of people Prehistory is the time before writing was invented

An archaeologist is a scientist who examines objects to learn about the human past Geography is the study of Earth’s surface and the processes that shapes it.

Oral Tradition is the process of passing stories down through the Generations by word of mouth.

A primary source is a first-hand account of an event or an artifact created during the period of history being studied. A secondary source is a record of the past, based on information from a primary source.

An artifact is an object made by someone in the past.

Otzi The IceMan The ICEMAN helped archaeologists figure out what his life was like. He had the following items on him: a knife made of flint bits of rope and leather a copper axe 6 foot bow for hunting Net similar to European bird nets A leather belt-pouch which held: * flint blades and animal bones used to repair equipment *a handful of black fungus with tiny crystals of sulfur and iron (found in today’s matches) attached to the fungus This fungus is now thought to be an early fire-starter He was wearing: a cape made of grass Coat made of deerskin Leggings, or leather pants, made of deerskin Leather boots insulated with grass Found Septmeber 19, 1991 Otzi is over 5,300 years old *Found in the ALPS bordering between Austria and Italy *Body studied initially by Konrad Spindler

About 5,000 years ago, people in Southwest Asia and in Africa developed a system of writing. This was the beginning of history when people began to record important events.

Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) ranged from about 4,000 BC to 7,000 BC with the development of agriculture
