2 The Ice Man The ice man lay covered with snow Discovered on the border of Italy and Austria in the Alps in 1991 His clothing, tools and body were preserved which gave clues to his life and death His copper ax indicated that he lived around 3000 B.C. An arrow head found in his chest led scientists to believe that he died from a shot by an arrow

3 Understanding History About 5,000 yrs. ago people in Southwest Asia and Africa developed writing Writing began the beginning of history Prehistory is the period of time before writing was invented

4 Prehistory To understand prehistory scientists must rely on clues not written records Archaeologists study objects to learn about past cultures The types found and bones can give clues to how man lived of tools

5 History Historians study written records to understand culture Historians compare writings from different cultures living at the same time

6 Oral Traditions Oral traditions are stories passed down by word of mouth to tell family history and important events These stories tell about a society and what people considered to be important

7 The importance of geography Geography is a term that describes the land Does it have lakes, mountains, deserts, forests, valleys, rivers The type of geography of an area will link a region’s history
