Objectives The children will: –Be able to identify differences and similarities they have with each other. –Learn how to use resources such as parents or relatives. –Be able to recognize or learn where a state or country is on the map. –Be able to present material to an audience. –Be able to understand their heritage and how it shapes them.

Activities Make family tree Locating where child was born or lived on map Discussion on similarities and differences between classmates Presentation to class of students family tree Sing the song “All the Children of the World”

Activity 1 Step 1: Give directions on how to make a family tree. Step 2: Pass out materials needed to complete assignment. Step 3: Children write out rough draft on background information. Step 4: Proofread rough drafts. Step 5: Children complete final draft of family tree.

Activity 2 Step 1: Children bring information from home/parents of where they were born or places they have lived. Step 2: Pass out dittos of maps. Step 3: Children color the location of where they are from. Step 4: Compare to your table/group the different places.

Activity 3 Step 1: Children will be divided into small groups, between 5 and 6 each. Step 2: Children will start comparing their characteristics of themselves. Step 3: Children will develop a chart with two columns of similarities and differences. Step 4: Children will switch groups to learn more about other kids.

Activity 4 Step 1: Each child will present their family tree to class. Step 2: Teacher will begin discussion about how people have different backgrounds. Step 3: Students can ask questions about other children’s backgrounds.

Activity 5 Step 1: Pass out dittos of song. Step 2: Teacher and students read the song together first. Step 3: Teacher will demonstrate the motions to the song. Step 4: Teacher will sing the song first to teach the children the melody. Step 5: The class sings the song.

“All the Children of the World” Teachers love the little children. All the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white They are precious in our sight. Teachers love the little children of the world.

Wrap-up! Teacher will end the last activity by discussing how everyone is different, but still alike. Teacher will then make everyone look around the room to see the difference each child brings to the classroom.

Questions/Answers What new things did you learn about your classmates? How does it make you feel? Did you have more similarities or differences? What is one thing you learned about someone, that you did not know?

Tips to bring this lesson into your classroom…. Determine how long you want this lesson to be. It could take up one class period, as well as a week. Send letters home to parents to get them involved, as well as informed about the assignment. Provide books, articles, maps, or web sites for children to explore for their project. Allow the students to be creative during their project.
