The Outsiders S.E. Hinton 1967 Coming of Age Marissa L. 4 th period

Setting The setting takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The characters live in the east side of their town. They were called Greasers, because of all the grease in their hair. Their enemies lived on the west side of town. And were called the Soc’s, short for Socials.

Characters CharacterPhysical Characteristics Adjectives of Personality Text Evidence /Explanation of Adjectives Ponyboy CurtisHis hair was longer than other boys I thought he was brave Because it takes and braveness to go inside a burning building Light brown hair, almost red I also thought he was scared Because he was scared to get jumped or get locked up in jail Greenish gray eyesAnd that he had courage Because he had courage that Johnny would live Johnny CadeHe was the youngest of all I thought he was scared too Because he didn’t want to go to jail and die Jet black hair, w/ shaggy bangs I also thought he was just following Ponyboy Because he just did whatever Ponyboy did Black eyes, and had, suspicious look And that he was the quiet one Because he got jumped bad by Soc`s.

Conflict The main conflict was, that the Greasers wanted to get revenge on the Soc’s. And when the got their chance to fight, they would. This conflict was Man vs. Society. VS.

Summary of Plot At the beginning of the story, Ponyboy gets jumped by the Soc’s walking home. When it gets dark Dally, Johnny and Ponyboy go to the drive in to see a movie. They meet two girls. (soc`s) After the movie, Johnny and Ponyboy fall asleep on the lot. Ponyboy wakes up and he’s late to go home. So Darry hits him, because he’s tired of it, so Ponyboy runs away with Johnny. At first they just run until their tired, but the Soc’s find them. And they get in big trouble…

Theme Don’t judge someone by the way the look or seem. Text Evidence 1:Everyone smoked in his neighborhood; including girls. Page: 97 Text Evidence 2:Theres a lot of named gangs in their neighborhood; like The River Kings, The Timber Street Tigers,etc.. Page: 11 Text Evidence 3: Johnny and Ponyboy save some little kids from a fire. Turn from delinquents to hero's. Pages: 90-93

Point of View S.E. Hinton tells the story from Ponyboy’s point of view. Which is also known as first person, because he is using “I, me, my, etc.” Since Ponyboy is the main character it makes more sense for him to tell the story. So we can see/know what is going through is mind, why he does what he does and what he thinks about everyone else. If the author told the story from a different point of view it would a whole different kind of story. For instance, if it was told from Soda’s point of view it would show how worried he is for Ponyboy and Johnny.

Symbolism The grease in their hair symbolizes that their greasers. It affects the story by showing who is who. And their nice clothing and short hair cuts symbolizes that their Soc’s. It also affects the story by showing who is who.

Recommendation This book is the best book that I've read in a long time. It really got my attention, because I could relate to it. The characters in this book were about the same age as us. And all of them went through the same problems as us too. And she didn’t make it long book to read, and there's some funny parts in it as well. She has done an really good job on this book, and I hope a lot of you read this because you would like it too! Its #1!
