Presentation transcript:

Lines of latitude Lines of latitude are imaginary lines drawn around the earth from east to west. These lines are called parallels of latitude because they run parallel to each other. They are measured in degrees and are given a number between 0 o and 90 o.

The most important lines of latitude are: The equator – 0 o Tropic of Cancer – 23 o N Tropic of Capricorn – 23 o S

Lines of Longitude Lines of longitude are imaginary lines which run in a north – south direction from the North Pole to the South Pole. The lines are called meridians of longitude and they are also measured in degrees. All lines of longitude are given a number between 0 o and 180 o

The most important line of longitude is the Prime Meridian. It is located at 0 o EW.

Finding a place The latitude longitude coordinate system uses measurements to describe a position on the surface of the earth. The system has been in use, with little change, since the astronomer Ptolemy used them in his first world atlas in A.D. 150
