I could be brief… BPM – Water cooled racks Thermalized Racks (BPM & BLM) consist of: o A temperature controller module that regulates the cool water flow depending on the cabinet temperature and monitors the status of the alarms. o 3 Alarms (per IP) have been implemented will be sent to TIM at the CCC : o Inlet water temperature, status of Rack fan, Cabinet temperature o if the last alarm (T° inside the cabinet) exceeds a safety level, the rack doors will open automatically o Alarms consist in NC (normally closed) switches connected via daisy chain o No direct connection to BIS foreseen for the moment ! BPMs during LS1 o Hardware Modifications: o 2 new BPMs installed in IR4 close to BGI o Few BPMs modified, repaired, displaced (roman pots) o 50Ω terminated strip-lines for ALFA, mechanical modifications to improve alignment, NEG coating,.. o Survey campaign o Verify position of ‘usual’ suspect BPMs, i.e. BPMD.. o Difficulty to align precisely o Replacing VME crate’s CPUs (MEN A20) – involving Firmware upgrades o Software modifications: o BPM non-linearity corrections using a 2-D cross-term polynomial o Reducing the maximum error from 6mm to 100um with an average error < 30um BPMD mapping Beam allowed area: ± radius/3

Interlock BPM Limiting signal reflection – Replaced shorted strip-lines with 50 Ω termination – Added absorptive filter at strip-line output (100 MHz) Better stability with thermal controlled racks Better monitoring/processing of Interlock data – Separated orbit and interlock functions (2 DABs)

Interlock BPM Firmware/Software Modifications New interlock functions running dedicated DAB – Interlock processes remains as before – bunch-by-bunch interlock post-mortem data (3564 slots x 294 turns) FESA adapted to new firmware (and new CPUs) New GUI for the interlock post-mortem t.b.d. (BI/OP)

What’s next o Hardware: o Run, test and maintain the LHC BPM system with Thermalized rack till start- up o Gain experience with the system, o Still accessing the machines to fix faulty channels as they pops up o Interlock BPM (within the next weeks) o Finalize the filters installation o Tuning of WBTN accordingly o Firmware and Software: o LHC BPM – re-using Ralph’s GUI application, may be new functionality o Still old firmware version – will be better to move to the new version as soon as possible o Testing and bug fixing for new firmware for interlock BPM o Int. BPM Fesa class being development in parallel o Expert GUI to be prepared fro start-up

The new interlock firmware will keep the old turn by turn “interlock data” summary: Number of valid bunches (H & V) outside dump limits Number of valid bunches (H & V) outside alarm limits Max and min values (H & V) at every turn. Number of ADC out of range samples (H & V) Add. Registers to follow in ‘real time’ the number of bunches outside limits and the number of errors during the time windows pre-defined. Modify the synchronous Post-Mortem data The turn-by-turn data( last 1024 sync. orbits, and last 1024 sync. Trajectories), has been removed, since they do not permit to diagnose the reason of the dump. These information will still be available in the orbit DAB running the old firmware. Provide B/B data (3564 slots) for the last 294 turns. Add. Fields - the number of errors per turn and turn flags New functionality – A channel triggers a dump it also freezes the others (H//V – B1/B2) in order to get comparable data for both planes and both beams Firmware/Software Modifications

Old / New situation Nominal Ultimate Noise floor HS mode will still dump beams for bunch population < 1E9 Dumping beam from signal reflections in HS for Bunch population >3E10 Dumping beam in LS mode for bunch population < 2E10 : to be defined

BPM with DOROS o DOROS developed to process BPM signals with <um resolution o It is optimised for o position resolution, absolute accuracy of centred beam, robustness and simplicity o It assumes: o bunch-by-bunch is not needed, required bandwidth is in the Hz range o larger beam offsets (> 1 mm) not measured with high precision (< 1 µm) o Prototyped for Collimators BPMs, Demonstrated sub-micrometre resolution at SPS and LHC

BPM with DOROS o Analogue signal conditioning of each BPM electrodes (including beam calibration) o Diode ORbit (DOR) as a high resolution position measurement o Diode OScillation (DOS) ≈ BBQ on each BPM o OS needs a synchronous timing (BST - turn clock) o Possibly 10 less sensitive than BBQ systems : Synchronous detection at two selectable frequencies, assumes beam excitation hopefully only at the 10 micrometre level – using ADT or AC dipole o Digitalisation using 24-bit ADCs sampling at f rev (BST turn clock or local clock) o FPGA real-time data processing o Allowing measurement of local betatron coupling and betatron phase advance o Data serialisation and transmission using UDP frames CDD = Compensated Diode Detector DPD = Diode Peak Detector DA = Differential Amplifier MC = Main Controller SC = Synchronisation Circuitry EPL = Ethernet Physical Layer LPF = Low Pass Filter PGA = Programmable Gain Amplifier F = Follower

BPM with DOROS o The essence of one DOROS unit: o Standalone Architecture using 1U 19” boxes (no VME, no operating system) o 8 orbit ADC channels, 4 oscillation ADC channels o 2 collimators with 4 buttons each o 2 regular 4-electrode BPMs o Ethernet (UDP) data transmission implemented on FPGA

DOROS post LS1 o DOROS will be installed on o New TCTP and TCSP collimators (x18) o In parallel to standard BPM electronics o Q1 strip-line BPMs in IP1,2,5 & 8 (x8) o Q7 strip-line BPMs in IP1 (x4) for coupling measurements o TOTEM’s button BPMs (x8) in IP5 o May be few add. channels - on-going discussions between OP-ABP-BI o Operation with DOROS in 2015 o Evaluate the system performance o In terms of Resolution, Accuracy, Stability, …. (sensitivity to cross-talks between the two beams in directional strip-line) o Develop its software and operational procedures, i.e. calibration, gain adjustment, BST synchronisation for oscillation, etc…. o Prepare next phase and upgrade o Possibly deploying up to Q7 o …

BPM – Water cooled racks o 4 racks/Octant, equipped with 2-3 VME crates o each crates filled up with up to 18 DABs

BPM – non-linearity corrections o Issue with 10-20% scaling error in LSS’s stripline BPMs o Normaliser non-linearity and error in test-bench using BPM simulator o Check with fixed attenuator – found >8% error in worst case o Limitation due to limited directivity of stripline BPM in common vacuum chambers : (Cross talk between both beams) o Mitigation using Synchronous Orbit Mode and selecting appropriate bunch – Tested in MD’s on one BPM– To be deployed…(contributions from OP)

Diode ORbit (and OScillation, DOROS) System 18 DOROS prototype installation on 2 BPMs at PT5  One DOROS front-end is a 1U 19” box  It has 8 beam inputs, one Ethernet socket and two optical sockets for BST B1 and B2  Signals from BPM electrodes are divided into two paths with passive splitters  One part goes to the standard electronics and the second to a DOROS input

I could be brief… BPM – non-linearity corrections BPMD mapping Beam allowed area: ± radius/3 BPMD: 130mm diameter strip-line LHC BPM in front of the Dump transfer line Average error in beam allowed area: 1.1 mm Max error for on-diag beam: 6mm! Average error in beam allowed area: 30 um Max error for on-diag beam: < 100 um Existing non-linearity correction can be improved by using a 2-D cross-term polynomial Especially for IR bumps and Dump line BPMs

BPM – Water cooled racks o One example of the evolution of temperature variations and BPM reading over one day (13 th May 2014) – using calibration signals o Water-cooled racks will keep the temperature variations within 1°C peak to peak over 22h (compared to 10°C without the rack) o Tp correction algorithm to be used to correct further the observed drift o RMS noise measured to be between 2-5um depending on the channels (possibly hitting the stability of our calibration source)
