 The term wiki comes from the phrase Wiki- Wiki which is the Hawaiian word for quick.  A wiki is a website that allows multiple users to create, modify and organize web page content.  Wikis are created for a group of people to collaborate and share ideas.  Name one famous Wiki?

 Wikis facilitate collaborative group projects  Students can edit pages from anywhere they have Internet access  No need to meet as a group  The Persepolis wiki can be viewed by everyone but edited only by students in your class

 Go to  Click on Sign In (upper right hand corner)  Sign in as follows ◦ Username: Firstname.Lastname (example John.Smith) ◦ Password: westlake (case sensitive)  Click on My Account to change password on the Settings Page (do this first time you log in)  Click on Dashboard Tab to access wiki  Under Favorite Wikis click on Persepolis

 Welcome  Wiki Tutorial  Overview/Resources  Task 1 ◦ Click on your group’s page ◦ Click on chapter ◦ Guiding questions (examples)  Task 2 ◦ Choose a question to discuss ◦ Click on your group’s page

 Verify that you are signed in  Click the Edit tab (note some pages are protected and you cannot edit them)  Only one student should edit same page at the same time

 Just start typing!  Editing a page is like using Microsoft Word.  Use the bold, italic, and underline buttons for simple formatting  Use the Color and Style Editor button to change your text’s size, color, and font  Use the dropdown list to make Headings  Create bulleted or numbered lists  DON’T FORGET TO CLICK SAVE WHEN DONE!

 Highlight the text or image that you would like to make into a link  Select the Link icon from the editor toolbar  Select the External Link tab  Type or paste the URL into the Address field  Click the Add Link button  Save the wiki page CIA – The World Factbook - Iran

 Select the File icon from the editor toolbar  Click the Upload Files button to locate and upload image on your computer (from scanner/camera/internet)  Click on the image to place it on the page  Click on the image to get the File Properties popup, and adjust the alignment and size of your image, or add a caption  Save the wiki page

 Place the cursor where you would like the link to your file to appear  Select the File icon to locate the file on your computer  Upload File (Word, Excel, PDF, PowerPoint)  Click on the file to place it on the page.  Save the wiki page

 Place the cursor where you want the video to appear  Select the Widget icon from the editor toolbar  In the Widgets tool, select Video from the side menu and choose your video service or click Other  In a separate browser window, navigate to your video. Look for something that says “Embed” (or maybe “Share”), followed by a piece of code. Copy this code.  Back on your wiki page, paste the copied code into the field in the Widget tool. Hit Save.  Click on the embedded widget to get the Widget Properties popup, and adjust the alignment and size of your video  Save the wiki page

 Can view all Wiki edits  Mrs. Matthews will utilize this feature to determine how much each individual student is contributing to the Wiki  Can revert to a previous version if necessary  If you edit page but don’t save it, you will get a message.

 Click on the Discussion Tab of another group’s page to add your positive comments  Other students or Mrs. Matthew’s may leave comments on your group’s Discussion Page

 Edit your practice page  Insert your name; bold and underlined  Link to a website on Iran  Insert a map of Iran  Don’t forget to click SAVE
