Ch. 6.3 Earthquake Damage

 The safest place to be during an earthquake is out in the open away from tall structures.  Buildings built on loose rock and soil suffer more earthquake damage than those built on solid rock.  Tsunamis may flood low-lying shorelines following ocean floor earthquakes.

Earthquake Safety  Those living near faults should be prepared with basic survival supplies.  If indoors during a quake, get to a doorway or under a sturdy table. Stay away from windows or heavy objects that may tip over.  Be careful after the quake.

Earthquake Prediction  Very inexact. Not reliable.  Some signs that may signal future earthquakes include: history of past earthquakes, animal behavior, slight ground tilting, changes in earth’s magnetic field, changes in well levels, gas seepage from rocks, or changes in local P-wave speed.

Seismic Gaps  Areas along fault zones that have not experienced earthquakes.  They are places in faults where the fault is very firmly locked and unable to move.  Since stress continues to build in these areas, some scientists think these areas will be the sites of future major earthquakes.
