2 2 Earthquake Activity  Earthquakes are natural geological events that provide information about Earth.  Unfortunately they also cause billions of dollars in property damage and kill an average of 10,000 people every year.

4 4 Studying Earthquakes  Scientists who study earthquakes and seismic waves are seismologists.  The instrument that is used to record primary, secondary, and surface waves from earthquakes all over the world is called a seismograph.  Seismologists can use records from seismographs called seismograms to learn more than just where the epicenter of an earthquake is located.

6 6 Measuring Earthquake Magnitude The Richter magnitude scale is used to describe the strength of an earthquake and is based on the height of the lines on the seismogram.  The Richter scale has no upper limit.  However, scientists believe that a 9.5 would be the maximum strength an earthquake could register.

8 8 Past Earthquakes  Most of the earthquakes you hear about are large ones that cause great damage.  However many thousands of earthquakes happen every year; their magnitudes, or strengths are too small to be felt by humans.  Minor earthquakes that do not do damage or that can not be felt by humans register between 3.0 and 4.9 on the Richter scale.

9 9 Describing Earthquake Intensity  Earthquakes can also be described by the amount of damage they cause.  The scale to measure intensity, or damage amount, is called the Mercalli intensity scale.  Intensity-I earthquakes are not felt by people and there is no damage.  Intensity-II earthquakes can be felt by everyone indoors during the day but only felt by a few people outdoors.  Intensity-IX earthquakes cause damage to buildings and cracks in earth.  Intesity-XII would cause massive damage to buildings, the ground, and cars can be thrown into the air from the vibrations.

11 11 Liquefaction  Wet soil can be strong most of the time, but the shaking from an earthquake can cause it to act more like a liquid.  This is called liquefaction.  When liquefaction occurs in soil under a building, the building can sink into the soil and collapse.  People living in earthquake regions should avoid building on loose soil.

13 13 Tsunamis  Most earthquake damage occurs when surface waves cause buildings, bridges, and road to collapse.  People living near the seashore, however, have another problem.  An earthquake under the ocean, causes a sudden movement of the ocean floor.  The movement pushes against the water, causing a powerful wave that can travel thousands of kilometers in all directions.  Ocean waves caused by earthquakes are called seismic sea waves or tsunamis.  Far from the shore, a wave caused by an earthquake is so long that a large ship might ride over it without anyone noticing.  But when one of those waves breaks on the shore, it forms a towering crest that can reach 30m in height.

16 16 Tsunami Warnings  Just before a tsunami crashes onto shore, the water along a shoreline might move rapidly toward the sea, exposing a large area of the shore, similar to low tide.  This is a clear warning sign that a tsunami could strike soon.  People should move to higher ground immediately.  Because of the number of earthquakes that occur around the Pacific Ocean, the threat of tsunamis is constant.  To protect lives and property a warning system has been set up in coastal areas and for the Pacific islands to alert people if a tsunami is likely to occur.  However, even tsunami warnings can’t prevent all loss of life.  In the 1960 tsunami that struck Hawaii, 61 people died when they ignored the warning to move away from coastal areas.

18 18 Earthquake Safety  Although earthquakes cannot be predicted, we can see where earthquakes are most likely to occur in the United States.  Knowing where earthquakes are likely to occur helps in long-term planning.  Cities can take action to reduce damage and loss of life.  Many buildings withstood the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake because they were built with the expectation that such an earthquake would occur someday.

20 20 Quake-Resistant Structures  During earthquakes buildings, bridges, and highways can be damaged or destroyed.  Most loss of life during an earthquake occurs when people are trapped in or on these crumbling structures.  Seismic-safe structures stand up to vibrations that occur during an earthquake.  Today, in California, some new buildings are supported be flexible, circular moorings placed under the buildings.  These moorings are made of steel plates filled with alternating layers of rubber and steel.  The rubber acts like a cushion to absorb earthquake waves.  Tests have shown that buildings supported in this way should be able to withstand an earthquake measuring up to 8.3 on the Richter scale without major damage.  In older buildings, workers often install steel rods to reinforce building walls.  All these things help to reduce damage to structures.

22 22 Before an Earthquake  To make a home as earthquake safe as possible, certain steps can be taken.  To reduce the danger of injuries from fallen objects, move heavy objects from high shelves to lower shelves.  Also learn how to turn off the gas, water, and electricity in your home.  A new method that is being used to minimize the danger of fire is the use of sensors on gas lines.  These sensors automatically shut off the gas when earthquake vibrations are detected.

23 23 During an Earthquake  If you are indoors during an earthquake move away from windows and any objects that can fall on you.  Seek shelter in a doorway or under a sturdy table or desk.  If you are outdoors during an earthquake stay in the open-away from power lines or anything that might fall.  Stay away from chimneys or other parts of buildings that can fall on you.

25 25 After and Earthquake  If water and gas lines are damaged, the valves should be shut off by an adult.  If you smell gas, leave the building immediately and call authorities from a phone call away from the leak area.  Stay away from damaged buildings.  Be careful around broken glass and rubble and wear boots or sturdy shoes to prevent cutting your feet.  Finally, stay away from beaches.  Tsunamis often hit after the ground has stopped shaking.
