A person’s blood type is determined by the type of antigen, or blood protein, carried in the blood. A person with type A has blood with antigen A.

AB AB O Antigen A Antigen B Antigens A & B No Antigens

Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system that help to destroy foreign cells or proteins. Generally, blood antibodies are opposite the antigens, duh! A person with type A blood carries Antibody B.

AB AB O Antibody B Antibody A No Antibodies Antibodies A & B

Fill in the blood type chart:

Type A:

Type B:

Type AB:

Type O:

When a blood transfusion is required, you must consider the antigen of the donor with the antibody of the recipient.

Analyze Your Data: Which blood type is the universal donor? Type O Which blood type is the universal recipient? Type AB

The Million Dollar Question! A wealthy elderly couple die together in an accident. Soon a man shows up to claim their fortune, saying he is their only son who ran away from home as a boy. Other relatives dispute his claim. Hospital records show that the deceased couple were type AB and O respectively. The claimant to the fortune was type O. Could he be their son? (Fill out the punnett square and explain)
