Political Changes Wanted a strong gov’t like the Western World Meiji Constitution – all citizens are equal Legislature/Diet – One elected House for people appointed by emperor Separate Departments set up – Navy, Army, Finance, Education Western Technology to strengthen military BUT would lead to the end of Samurai Warriors

Economic Changes Business class to adopt western methods Railroads, Better Ports, Telegraph, Postal System Banking – Zaibatsu, powerful banking families 1890’s with industry came urbanization Modern Machines, Shipyards, Steel, Coal Mining Copper, Silk Manufacturing boomed

Social Changes Women’s roles changed More education of children Mixing of cultures – Cultural Diffusion Competitive with the West after Meiji Restoration The MOST modern Asian Nation

Strengths of Meiji Japan was able to compete with the west because of a modern military Japan gained power in Eastern Asia Japan begins aggression in China and Korea (a Western-like thought) Treaty of Portsmouth – Japan gains control of Korea
