S6- 1 Refugees

S6- 2 Refugees Economic problems have accelerated the number of economic refugees moving toward Italy by boat and toward Greece over land. At the moment, the flow of refugees is small, but threatens to accelerate. Both the Greek and Italian government are demanding that measures be taken to stem the flight.

S6- 3 Refugees (Continued) Popular pressure on the governments internally is increasing as poignant pictures of refugees’ intercepted flight appear in the media worldwide. Two incidents occur within a day. A small craft with 14 economic refugees sinks off the coast of Italy with 12 of the 14 drowning. Interviews of the two survivors gain worldwide attention. A few hours earlier an over- eager Greek border guard shot and seriously wounded an economic refugee.
