What is a Smartboard? A Smartboard is an interactive white board that is connected to a computer and a projector The board has a touch- sensitive surface that can access and control any application on the computer

Uses for a Smartboard Whiteboard Replacement Video Player/Projector Display Graphs Virtual Manipulatives Online Tutorials and Quizzes

Whiteboard Replacement The teacher can write on the Smartboard with special “pens” of any color. The Smartboard then saves the page instead of having to erase all the information.

Video Player/Projector A VCR can be connected to the projector to show videos on a large screen. The teacher can also stop the video and write on the screen to stress key points.

Display Graphs Graphing calculators can be connected to the Smartboard to display graphs and other data on a large screen. Other programs with graphing capabilities are also available.

Virtual Manipulatives The Smartboard is a great way for students to work with manipulatives. The site listed below offers virtual manipulatives online for grades K-12.

Online Tutorials Students can use the Smartboard to review their skills using online tutorials. This gives the students a fun and interesting way to review material and receive immediate feedback at the same time.

Personal Experience I received a Smartboard in my classroom at the start of this semester. It is very easy to learn to use and its capabilities are endless as far as the programs that can be used with its technology. My students love using it to review concepts because of the hands on interaction the Smartboard offers. With all the technology used in schools today, I would recommend the use of a Smartboard in any classroom.
