About OBOB Encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.

Who can participate? Youth in 3 rd -12 th grades Must be on a public school team or a ODE registered private school (none in Newberg). Home-school and online school kids can join a team at the public school they would otherwise attend.

Registration Registration: $55/$60 per school until November 1 st ($70/$75 per school from Nov. 2 nd – 15 th ). Deadline: Checks must be postmarked by November 15 th. Register at oboblsta.pbworks.com

You must… Have no more than 4 members on a team with 1 alternate. You must have a sponsor from your school (media specialist, library paraprofessional or school staff member). Your team must be registered by Nov. 15 th, and your school must have paid by then.

What kind of practice is expected? How serious are you? Lots of reading and re-reading Questions- Use any questions you can find to practice and write your own. Practice! Practice as a group. Do not do anything in practice that you can’t do in competition.

Practice Advice Choosing a spokesperson is important. It’s helpful if it’s someone who has read all of the books, is familiar with the characters, and confident with the title and author names. Practice answering as a team with your spokesperson. Once the question is read you have 15 seconds to respond. Your spokesperson answers for the team.

How do teams progress to State? Each school may send 1 team to Regionals. Regionals: Round Robin (each team plays twice) Sweet 16 Awesome 8 Fabulous 4 Final battle The top team or teams at Regionals advance to state (same format).

Define success before competing So what if you don’t win? As a team talk about what success looks like before you get to a competition. Has participating enhanced your love of books? Have you learned to work together as a team? Have you practiced good sportsmanship?

Resources for OBOB Books Check out books from your school library. Could your parent group buy your school an extra set of books for the library? Check out books or audio books from the public library. The public library has extra books for check out from the Children’s Desk.

OBOB wiki (it’s extensive) It’s likely that most your questions can be answered on the OBOB wiki at oboblsta.pbworks.com (a little hard to navigate but a website is coming soon) Read through the “OBOB Handbook ”
