Day 72 Napoleon's Collapse Warm Up: What are the characteristics that make a hero or a villain? Which was Napoleon? Objective: Understand Nationalism that developed throughout Europe Standard: 10:2.4 Homework: Reading 234-237 WB 78-79

Continental System The Plan Attempt to isolate Great Britain and make France more self sufficient by setting a blockade. Result Portugal does not honor system British smugglers. British Navy retaliates with own blockade that is more successful. Neutral ships were forced to port and taxed by British

Peninsular War The Plan Force Portugal to accept Continental System. Result To get to Portugal French troops had to go through Spain Due to protest of Spanish Napoleon easily defeats Spanish troops and places Joseph his brother on the throne Results in 6 years of “Guerilla” Warfare

Invasion of Russia The Plan Russia refused to stop selling grain to Britain so Napoleon invades Russia Results June 1812, 420,000 soldiers march into Russia Noticing uneven fight Alexander implements scorched earth policy. Including burning of Moscow After waiting a month Napoleon's starved and cold army retreats. Russian raiders attack. Ends with only 10,000 soldiers In the winter of 1812, a grim Napoleon led the battered and half frozen remnants of his Grand Army in retreat from Moscow.

Downfall Britain, Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden all declare War Napoleon formed a new army but not enough time to train. He was banished to Elba

100 Days Louis XVIII (Louis XVI brother and émigré placed in power) Napoleon escapes forms an army with French support. Enters Paris (March 1815) Defeated by Combined British and Prussian troops led by the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo, Belgium (1815). Is isolated on the Island of St. Helena Duke of Wellington led the attack of Napoleon at Waterloo that finally defeated the French Emperor.
