The Secret of Genuine Greatness The Upside of Down

For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Matthew 23:12 (NIV)

Two Choices Exalt Yourself Humble Yourself

Humility and our Ambition

Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:4 (NIV)

Reason for Ambition Made by God Dominion over the world Called to reflect God’s image

Humility and our Need to be Noticed

The greatest among you will be your servant The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Matthew 23:11-12 (NIV)

Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide… they love the place of honor at banquets… and to have men call them ‘Rabbi.’ Matthew 23:5-7 (NIV)

Humility and Our Tendency to Compare

But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ ...For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. Luke 14:10-11 (NIV)

But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Luke 14:13-14a (NIV)

Humility and Our Relationship with God

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: Luke 18:9 (NIV)

Two men went to the Temple to pray... Luke 18:10 (NIV)

The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men — robbers, evildoers, adulterers — or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' Luke 18:11-12 (NIV)

"But the tax collector stood at a distance "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' Luke 18:13 (NIV)

When the two men went home, it was the tax collector and not the Pharisee who was pleasing to God. If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored. Luke 18:14 (CEV)

God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time. 1 Peter 5:5-6 (NASB)
