Service Learning Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection that enriches the learning experience, teaches civic responsibility and strengthens communities. Service Learning is not just community service. It’s a project based, hands-on, inquiry oriented process to interact with the community. Through an interdisciplinary approach students build an awareness about how they can live a healthy life.

Principles of Kids As Planners in Service Learning Academic Integrity: – Identify standards and curriculum requirements to be met through a project (Kids projects are not “add-ons” to the curriculum) –Use multiple methods for assessing student learning –Ensure that all students have a well-rounded experience (i.e. “specialize” in area of interest and improve in areas of weakness)

Student Ownership: –Students identify community issue or problem –Students exercise leadership and decision- making skills –Students gain skills needed to accomplish project tasks

Apprentice Citizenship: –Address a significant issue or need in the community or school –Identify a community and school audience who will value the contribution –Engage the expertise of community members

Ambassadors Host Wear Red for Women Day and Promote Healthy Eating with Recipes from their Cookbook

How to Develop a Service Learning Project Facilitate the students as they as they plan the project –Identify community need, community partners and community experts –Contact community partners and schedule performances choreographed by the students –Contact experts to share information with the school –Student involvement gives them ownership of the learning experience as they live the democratic process –Ensure that curriculum objectives will be met –Give students structured opportunities to write, think about and discuss their experiences so analytical reflection will happen

Improve Higher Order Thinking Physical activity focuses mental effort –Memorization improved –Leads to higher order thinking skills –Kinesthetic learning addressed We can integrate jumping rope or aerobic activity with academic disciplines and higher order thinking skills. –Analyzing –Predicting –Inferring –Applying

How To Run An Event Invite the school community to support the event. Send press release to local newspaper and ask for photographer. Collect data, record event with photos and video. Display information in prominent place in school. Put video on website.

Tool Kit The resources in the tool kit contain materials that could enable the student-teacher-administrator to extend these principles of service learning to all other events in their life- academic and non- academic. The code of conduct that the participants sign, for instance, is equally applicable to their other life experiences (i.e. civic and personal responsibility).
