 A hydrogen fuel cell is the source of power for hydrogen renewable energy.  The fuel cell stores it until it is needed. Hydrogen and oxygen react which causes it to form electricity. Hydrogen is extracted from natural gas by a reformer and another machine in the gray box add oxygen to carbon monoxide to make carbon dioxide.  The by-products are pure water and carbon dioxide  In our area Georgia Tech is using it to power an unmanned aerial vehicle. In California and Japan they are already being used on cars. The only major setback is the cost and distribution of fuel cell stations.

 A hydrogen fuel cell generates electricity through an electrochemical reaction using hydrogen and oxygen.  the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT 2005) and the Advanced Energy Initiative of 2006, aims to develop hydrogen, fuel cell and infrastructure technologies to make fuel-cell vehicles practical and cost-effective by  The United States has dedicated more than one billion dollars to fuel cell research and development so far.

 Scientists have also discovered that some algae and bacteria produce hydrogen under certain conditions, using sunlight as their energy source.  Experiments are underway to find ways to induce these microbes to produce hydrogen efficiently.

 Hydrogen fuel cells are very efficient and produce only water as a by-product, but they are expensive to build.  An engine converted to burn pure hydrogen produces only water and minor amounts of NOX as exhaust.  Adding just five percent hydrogen to gasoline can significantly lower emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to ground-level ozone pollution.

 It does not release harmful carbon dioxide that is detrimental to our atmosphere.  It is a clean fuel that can be used in places where it’s hard to use electricity. Sending electricity a long way costs four times as much as shipping hydrogen by pipeline.
