Station 1: Lava Lamp Observe and record what you see in the lava lamp. How might density play role in how the “goo” moves in the lamp? What does heat play on atoms and molecules? How might heat affect density?

Station 2: Mystery Ice Observe the two containers with clear liquid and ice. Why do you think the ice is floating in one liquid and sinks in the other? Can you come up with a possible explanation?

Station 3: Magic Eggs What differences do you observe between the eggs in the different glasses? What do you think causes the differences between the eggs in the glasses? Can you make a connection between what the egg is doing and something you have seen in the “real” world?

Station 4: Diffusion Confusion Place a few drops of food coloring in the container of hot water. Then place an equal amount of food coloring in the cold water. What do you observe? Why do you think the two liquids behaved differently?

Station 5: Bobbing Grape What happens to a grape with no skin in 7up? What patterns do you see the grapes taking? Does this remind you of anything you have seen or learned?

Station 6: Christmas Convection What happens to the windmill when the candles are lit? What is making the blades spin? Would the blades keep spinning if the candle were blown out?

BIG IDEA 1 As matter heats up, it rises. When matter cools, it sinks.

BIG IDEA 2 The density of matter affects sinking and floating.

BIG IDEA 3 The amount of salt in water affects its density. The more salt in the water, the more dense it is.

BIG IDEA 4 Particles that are heated have more energy, and therefore, move faster than particles with less energy.

BIG IDEA 5 Changes in density can cause convection.

BIG IDEA 6 Air is a fluid. By adding heat to air, you change its density and cause it to rise.

BIG IDEA 7 Fluids will layer based on their densities. Two things that affect the density of a liquid are temperature and salinity.
