JESUIT AIDS PROJECT HARARE, ZIMBABWE JUNE AND JULY 2012

JAP’S MISSION To bring love and justice by empowering young people aged years in schools, colleges, orphan institutions, parishes and communities to avoid STI’s and HIV infections and to be responsible members of the society. The organization envisions an empowered generation of young people free from HIV and AIDS.

 Psycho-social visits to Youth Against AIDS clubs in High schools around Harare  Data collection and reporting  Attending and participating in organizational activities, meetings, staff reviews and trainings  Other initiatives such as co-facilitation and starting new clubs at other institutions and independent research  Submitting weekly articles to the organizations website

 I got the opportunity to volunteer at a free clinic affiliated with JAP called G. Spagnoli center for the Promotion of Health for Women and children  Duties involved checking vitals for all patients, data capture during consultations and helping the few nurses  I also interviewed the resident Doctor, patients and their families on food distribution days

 Gained skills in group facilitation, communication, report writing  My confidence and self awareness improved  Gained knowledge and exposure to what working in non-profit involves in terms of protocol and challenges they face  I enjoyed working with patients and I felt more sure to be on the Premed track

 I would like to thank all staff at Jesuit AIDS Projects for their support in my exceptionally shorter intern experience namely Mr. Baluwa my supervisor, Mrs. S Chibika the director, Mr. Kalongonda other interns and volunteers  Special thanks to the Katherine Houghton Hepburn Center for funding my summer experience
