‘That was torture!’ What ‘I’ word am I thinking of? Title: S&L Group Discussion Preparation A) List as many ‘good manners’ you can think of with regards to a fruitful, considerate group discussion on a topic; ensure you consider the handling of controversial subjects. Before B, leave space for board notes. B) List as many oratory qualities you recall from our single and paired S&L activities.

* Making eye contact with people * Back-channelling * Share ideas * Talk to everyone * Encourage other people to get involved. How? * Don’t dominate the conversation; don’t hide from the conversation * Challenge people in a constructive, intelligent way

Watch the clip taken from ‘The Big Question’ and make further notes of good and/or poor examples of group discussion. Remember that your notes will help you in your own assessment.

Write an short appraisal (with reasons) before we listen to the BBC synopsis.

Imagine that the next ‘Big Question’ is ‘Should sex education be taught at a younger age in school?’ In groups, divide yourself in to for/against. Using the information given, extract relevant points to support your argument. Refer to your notes.

Mrs Ramsey has decided that your group will be organising the end of year prom this year. She wants detailed proposals and clear plans about what you will do to make the event successful before coming to a decision about who will be given the responsibility.

Your school has decided to hold an event to raise money for charity. The headteacher has decided to appoint a student task force who will be responsible for organising the event. As members of this task force it is your responsibility to make key decisions regarding the organisation and funding of this event.

Decide on your topic. Decide your roles. Create a series of points you will aim to express during the group discussion. Again, refer to your notes – link to Prep A and Prep B. HW: You should research your topic and find information that link to AFOREST and the mark scheme. For some or all of your points, write students’ possible counterpoints. REHEARSE and PEER ASSESS
