Lots of facts about tsunamis  Tsunamis are huge waves of water that are usually caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.  When tsunamis hit shallow water (often near the coast)they slow down but increase in hieght  As a tsunami approaches the shore water may recede from the coast if it is shallow enough the water may be pulled back hundreds of metres. If you are in the area observing this is a good indication that a tsunami is on the way.  The tsunamis waves created by the tohoku earth quake reached heigh of over 40 meters (131 feet)in some areas wiping out coastal towns and causing a number of nuclear accidents.  Tsunamis are sometimes referred to as tidal waves but this term has fallen out of favour because tsunamis are not related to tides.

Tsunamis tips on saftey When in coastal areas stay alert for tsunamis warnings. Have a disaster plan. Know whether your at risk for danger. Plan a evacuation route. Prepare a disaster supplise for your home and car.include a first aid kit, canned food and can opener, bottle water battery operated radio, flashlight, protective clothing and written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas, water. Follow instructions issued by local authorities. You will probaly want to evacuate immediately.
