SECOND GRADE EXPECTATIONS WHAT CAN I DO TO ASSIST MY STUDENT THIS SUMMER TO GET READY FOR SECOND GRADE?

New Construction on 2 nd Grade Rooms

READING Have students read ALOUD to someone in the family at least an hour a week. Limit “yes/no” questions and ask more “open-ended” questions about what they are reading. Join a summer library reading program. Maintain balance between reading fiction and non-fiction.

Math Practice addition and subtraction flashcards. Practice telling time to the hour and half- hour. Identify each coin and their value. Practice skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Identify the name of shapes located around you.

LANGUAGE ARTS Encourage your child to keep a summer journal to tell about their life experiences. Students should write in complete sentences with a beginning capital letter and correct ending punctuation. Students should practice using wide ruled notebook paper with the holes on the left. Second grade does not use handwriting paper.

INFORMATION PACKETS We will place a link to access materials this summer via our website. Thank you for coming this evening!
