The Life Cycle of the White Tailed Deer 2. Yearling 1. Fawn 3. Doe OR Buck

A Picture

Fawn Newborn deer They are considered fawns until they are about 14 months old Can walk within moments of being born Looks very similar to its parent Dependent on parent (the mother) for survival. Has white spots to serve as camouflage from predators Has no scent to protect from predators, too

Yearling months of age – considered adolescence Body structure begins to look like an adult deer Becomes less dependent on the mother for food and protection – A female will stay with its mother for two years – A male will stay with its mother for one year Starts to lose the white spots from coat as early as the winter of its first year

Adult: Doe Adult female deer – Considered an adult after 18 months Has a reddish-brown coat in the summer, grayish- brown coat in the winter with a white throat, belly and tail Uses its tail to signal danger and lead its fawns to safety Will have 1-3 fawns at a time in May or June

Adult: Buck Adult Male deer – Considered an adult after 18 months Has a reddish- brown coat in the summer, grayish- brown coat in the winter with a white throat, belly and tail Has antlers that fall off every winter – First antlers grow at about age 2 Males travel alone and do not help much with fawns
