Hypothesis If we test which paper towel is the most absorbent, then Bounty regular will be the most absorbent.

Variables Constant Variables: water cup graduated cylinder tray funnel Manipulated Variable: brands of paper towels Responding Variable: the measure of the amount of water being absorbed by the paper towels

Materials Water Paper towels Container Graduated cylinder Tray Funnel

Procedures Pour 50ml of water into a container. Immerse the paper towel in the water. Take out the paper towel. Use a funnel to pour the water that is left into the graduated cylinder and record the measurement. Subtract the measurement from 50 to get the amount that was absorbed. Repeat the experiment 2 more times. Repeat steps 1-6 for all the brands of paper towels.

Results Bounty Jumbo averaged 20ml. Sparkle averaged 13ml. Brawny averaged 19ml. Winn Dixie average 13ml. Great Value averaged 19ml. Bounty Basic averaged 17ml. Publix averaged 15ml. Fiora averaged 12ml. The school’s paper towel averaged 6ml. Finally, 1 Big Roll averaged 15ml.

Conclusion Our hypothesis was supported by our experiment. Bounty Jumbo absorbed the most water, 20ml. The school paper towel absorbed only 6ml. We now know why we always need more than one school paper towel to dry our hands. The thicker paper towels like Bounty Jumbo, Brawny, and Great Value absorbed the most, while the thinner paper towels absorbed less. Perhaps we did not soak some paper towels enough. Also, we may have made mistakes by not pouring all of the water back into the graduated cylinder.

Application Now we know that Bounty Jumbo is the most absorbent paper towel. We will tell our parents to buy Bounty. If Bounty is not around we will look for thicker paper towels. We thought of another question. What would happen if we used syrup or oil instead of water?

Abstract We wanted to know which paper towel brand was the most absorbent. We thought that it would be Bounty Jumbo. We filled a container with 50ml of water, immersed the paper towels one at a time, took them out, and poured the water that was not absorbed back into the graduated cylinder. We subtracted that number from 50ml to find how much water was absorbed. Bounty Jumbo was the most absorbent, 20ml. The school’s paper towel was the last, 6ml. Our hypothesis was supported by our experiment. Brawny and Great Value were also close. From now on when we go to the store, we will tell our parents to buy Bounty Jumbo. It will take less paper towels to clean liquid messes. This will make our planet better. We will kill less trees. To improve our experiment we need to make sure that all the the paper towel is underwater. Also, we could squeeze out the liquid from the paper towel directly into the graduated cylinder. We could also try the same experiment with syrup.
