Animalympics

Learning Objectives [All] Will explore and compare athletic differences between humans and animals. [Most] Will debate findings and award medals to the most deserving animals. [Some] Will design their own gold medal winning animal based on adaptations.

Discuss In pairs, decide which of the following is the most important when competing in a sporting event: Speed Distance Strength Endurance Skill How did you choose?

Welcome to the Animalympics! You have been chosen to compete in the Animalympics by finding or designing an animal that would beat a record-breaking human in a race. Your animal must belong to the same category as the human: Land, Sea or Air. In groups, you will then be asked to decide which animal in your category deserves a gold, silver or bronze medal. Good luck! Fill in your contender card with your chosen animal, as illustrated on the following slides.

The contender card (if you are using an actual animal) Draw or paste a picture of your animal Find the country’s flag The event they are participating in Your animal’s record(speed/distance/time) Find the country’s flag your animal belongs to Their record (speed/distance/time)

The contender card (If you are creating an animal) Draw a picture of your animal Which country does it come from? Insert the flag The event (s) they are adapted for Label the adaptations for this activity. Find the country’s flag The event they are participating in Their record (speed/dist ance/time) Your animal’s record(speed/distance/time)

Who has won in your event? In event groups, decide which of your animal contenders deserve gold, silver or bronze medals.

Who has won overall? As a class, gather all of the gold medal winners in each event together and decide who deserves the overall gold, silver and bronze medals.

How did you decide? Which were the most/least important factors? Did everybody agree? Were there some positives or negatives to your choices? Was there a clear winner? Which medal was the easiest to pick? Did the habitat of your animal affect your choices?

Tell us who won your medals to receive this fantastic poster! Ask your teacher to us your final three results.
