Engine Basics The four cycle engine

Engine Operation The Otto Cycle engine

Properties of Combustion Air Fuel Spark/heat source

Intake Stroke -Air and fuel are mixed by carb or via injector and throttle body -As the piston descends vacuum is created drawing in fuel and air

Air/Fuel Mixture

Intake Stroke -Atomized fuel enters the combustion chamber via the intake valve the exhaust valve remains closed

Compression Stroke As the piston returns to top of cylinder or Top Dead Center the atomized fuel/air mixture is compressed Both the intake and exhaust valves are held shut to increase pressure

Power Stroke As the piston returns to the top an electronically fired spark ignites the air/fuel mixture The resulting explosion creates pressure and forces the piston down to Bottom Dead Center

Exhaust Stroke As the piston returns to Top Dead Center the exhaust valve opens allowing the burnt fuel to vent into the exhaust system

Engine Timing The entire cycle take two revolutions of the Crankshaft Timing is controlled by chain, belt or gears
