Acceptable Use Policy for RRISD Students

Acceptable Use for Students Using a computer makes school work fun! Just as there are rules in your classroom, in the Science lab, at home, and for crossing the street\ safely, there are rules for using  Computers,  Software, and  The Internet.

Definition Acceptable means it is permitted and OK! You know what use means, right? Policy means rules or guidelines of an organization such as Round Rock ISD. So, when using computer at school, you must follow some guidelines.

Computer Use All equipment, such as keyboards, mice, computers, laptops, netbooks, digital cameras, and other equipment should be handled with care and respect.

Getting Started Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, then logon, each time you use a school machine. Enter your username and password. Your password is so secretive, you will only see dots.

Security Never login as someone else. If the person before you did not logoff, please be kind and do it for them, then logon yourself.

Having Problems? If you can’t log on or you are having other issues: Breathe Then tell your teacher what the problem is. Computers don’t respond to panic or anger. If you can’t log on or you are having other issues: Breathe Then tell your teacher what the problem is. Computers don’t respond to panic or anger.

When You are Done Be sure to log off of the computer, and leave all equipment in good order for the next person.

If on a Laptop: Shutdown When you use a laptop, shut down rather than log off when you are finished. Make sure all lights are out prior to closing the lid.

Charging Laptops and Netbooks When replacing a laptop or netbook into a cart, be sure to match the laptop to the slot number. Check that it’s getting POWER.

Software There are a variety of software programs available on the computers, but not all programs are appropriate for all students. Your teacher will let you know what she/he would like for you to use.

Internet Use the Internet ONLY when given permission by your teacher.

Student Internet Use Your teacher knows that Internet sites must:  support the educational goals and objectives of RRISD and  be educationally relevant so she/he will guide you to sites that have been previewed and found to be appropriate for student use.

What may you do on the Internet? Browse teacher-selected web pages with staff supervision. Contribute to class discussions, web pages or publications. Participate in teacher let chats. Research using teacher- selected resources.

Internet No-No’s Students may not… Use a computer without a teacher present. Students may be on the computer ONLY with a teacher in the room. Print, copy or save items from the Internet such as pictures, text or documents unless you have received permission from your teacher. Share personal information or sign up for anything here at school unless directed by your teacher.

Grades 3, 4 and 5 Students in grades 3-5 may type teacher- approved URL’s directly into the address bar- Students must have the address checked by the teacher before pressing Enter. Students in grades 4 and 5 may search subject directories - Ebsco, GALE, Pebble-Go, SIRS Discover, and World Book to name a few – with teacher approval and supervision. Google is not acceptable.

Website Credibility Information found on the Internet is NOT always true! How can you find out if a website is credible?  The 5 W’s of Website Evaluation The 5 W’s of Website Evaluation

Cyber Safety How can you be safe on the Internet? NEVER share personal information on the Internet. Become a Webonaut! Complete the Internet Safely Challenge.Webonaut See how CyberSmart you are!CyberSmart Cyber Safety Resources for RRISD Teachers Cyber Safety Resources

Students and Social Media Even outside of school, be a smart and safe Internet user. This includes Social Media (such as facebook, Instagram, kik, Vine and twitter). Think before you post! Be kind & ask yourself, “Would I want my teacher or parents to see this?” Show respect for yourself and others. Do not post yucky language or inappropriate images. Monitor what is being published about you. Be safe, never post information about your address, phone number or exact location.

Using Technology is a Privilege If you have any questions, be sure to ask your teacher. …which can be lost.
