TSTC Publishing Past, Present and Future

Mission Statement TSTC Publishing will become an industry leader in providing high-end technical instructional materials and related information to institutions of higher education and private industry.

Formation TSTC Publishing was created in May 2004 as an outgrowth of TSTC Waco transformation initiatives. The impetus behind its creation was to work with faculty to create instructional materials that better fit classroom needs at more affordable prices for students.

Current Staff Mark Long, Publisher Tammy Turner, Departmental Secretary Grace Arsiaga, Graphics Specialist Vacant, Publishing Editor

Production Model Faculty throughout the TSTC System (and beyond) produce content. TSTC Waco & Baylor University interns complete the bulk of editorial and graphics design work. Print-on-demand publishing through TSTC Printing Production allows for minimum inventory and storage costs while also allowing for timely updates to materials.

Benefits to Stakeholders Textbooks at more reasonable prices for students ($10.95 to $64.95). Textbooks that better fit the needs of instructors and students (one book for a class instead of 2-3 or more). Greater TSTC brand awareness through adoptions/sales of books outside of the TSTC System (books have been adopted at schools around the country as well as being licensed for publication in India). Revenue sharing of net profits from completed projects.

Types of Publications General use textbooks Custom textbooks Technology forecasts General interest and/or pro bono work

Publications History TSTC Publishing’s first two publications—software and biomedical equipment textbooks—were completed in August In the following eighteen months 21 additional books were published. At current staffing levels, it is anticipated that new titles a year will be published. Past & current projects have been initiated at TSTC Waco, Harlingen, West Texas, as well as schools outside of the TSTC System.

Marketing/Sales Model Textbooks are initially used only at school of origin. After field testing, textbooks are marketed throughout the TSTC System and beyond. As applicable, foreign rights are licensed to outside publishers.

Revenue Growth Gross sales fiscal year : $14,000 Projected gross sales fiscal year : +$106,000 Gross sales goal fiscal year : +$160,000

Revenue Sharing Profit sharing allows net revenues to be shared among faculty who write books along with TSTC colleges and departments that adopt textbooks. Revenue sharing from sales fiscal year totaled $1,000. Projected revenue sharing from sales fiscal year is $10,000.

Strategic Initiatives Establish a strong Internet presence utilizing New Media marketing tools. Establish business-to-business relationships with schools outside of the TSTC System through joint publishing ventures. Establish protocols for maximum repurposing of published content.
