Rise of the Industrial Age Resources, Inventions, Factories, and Big Cities

Frontier Theory Frederick Jackson Turner’s The Significance of the Frontier in American History Stated that farmers seeking their fortunes in ‘taming’ the frontier had largely shaped the American character…hardy men and women whose perseverance had made us who we are as a people. Declared that by 1893, the “frontier” ceased to exist because the best farmland was gone, government took more for parks, and Americans had bought up much more. It signified the end of an age and the beginning of a new era.

Americans Get Busy With the expansion of the country and the movement of the population, Americans looked for opportunity at every turn. The ‘American Dream’ of prosperity truly began to be realized for many who risked…

Resources Are Plentiful Natural resources are discovered everywhere as people lived and worked on the land – Coal in Alleghenys & Ozarks…Oil in PA…Iron in Appalachia and MN... Coal – long sought out since steam engines invented Iron – long sought out since early 1800s for tools & machines But Now… Oil is found and kerosene is distilled from it – lighting lamps Bessemer Process makes steel from iron – a harder material Barbed Wire Tin Cans Construction Beams -Bridges -Skyscrapers

Inventions Advance Culture Combined natural resources, observations and ingenuity Thomas Edison “harnesses” electricity & makes light bulbs By 1890 cities, industry and homes ran on electric power. Extended the day – benefits businesses Alexander Graham Bell invents telephone “Consumer” market grows, expands & new industries result

Industry Shapes the Landscape Steel Mill, Pittsburgh, 1880 Pittsburgh and Cleveland became centers for industry with plants located near the coal mines, and the landscape changed. Towns grew up where plants were – “company towns” which controlled every aspect of the workers’ lives. Americans gained employment, but lost much of the ability to pursue the dream.
