What are Waves? SWBAT e xplain the difference between waves, energy, and matter; describe the difference between transverse waves and compressional waves.

What is a Wave? Wave – rhythmic disturbance that carries energy without carrying matter. Mechanical wave – a wave that uses matter to transfer energy. What type of wave would be a mechanical wave? – Sound waves

Mechanical Waves Transverse wave – the wave energy causes the matter in a medium to move up and down or forward and backward at right angles to the direction the wave travels. What is an example of a transverse wave? – Stadium wave – Ocean

Transverse Wave Crest Trough

Mechanical Waves Compressional wave – matter in the medium moves backward and forward along the same direction the wave travels. What is an example of a compressional wave? – Sound waves

Mechanical Waves Both compressional and transverse waves are types of what kind of wave? – Mechanical waves How are waves produces? – When something vibrates waves are produced

Electromagnetic Waves Electromagnetic wave – a wave that can travel through space where there is no matter. What are some types of electromagnetic waves? – X-rays – Ultraviolet rays – Visible light rays What do you call the energy carried by electromagnetic waves? – Radiant energy
