Today’s Goals… I can explain the relationship between waves, energy, and matter. I can describe the difference between transverse waves, and compressional waves.

What is a wave? The way energy moves from place to place Examples: – Sound moves from my mouth to your ears – Light moves from a bulb to a book page to your eyes – Heat waves move from the sun to the Earth

What is a wave? How does energy move in a wave? – All waves are produced by something that is vibrating (moving) – That energy is transferred to particles – Then, particles bump into each other and transfer energy from one to the next – In a wave, the energy moves, but not the matter – A model for waves; page 227

Mechanical Waves Waves that need matter to transfer energy That matter that the wave travels through is called the medium Example: – For waves in an ocean, the medium is the water – Sound waves travel through the medium of air

Mechanical Waves There are two types of mechanical waves: – Transverse – Compressional
