Waves A wave is a disturbance that carries energy through matter or space.
3
Medium Most waves travel through a medium. Water is the medium for waves on a pond. Air is the medium for sound waves. For earthquakes, the Earth itself is the medium.
4
Electromagnetic Waves Electromagnetic waves do not need a medium. They change the electric and magnetic fields in space. Visible light waves and radio waves are types of electromagnetic waves.
5
Waves Transfer Energy The bigger a wave is, the more energy it carries. A tsunami is a huge ocean wave caused by an earthquake. Ocean waves do work on shore by breaking up rock to form sandy beaches.
6
Vibrations Most waves are caused by vibrating objects. The vocal cords in your throat move back and forth causing air to vibrate and creates sound waves.
7
Transverse Wave A transverse wave is a wave where the wave motion is perpendicular to the particle motion. When people do the wave- that’s an example of a transverse wave.
8
Longitudinal Waves Longitudinal waves have motion that is parallel to wave motion. Sound waves are longitudinal waves. Picture on page 512
