Post- Impressionism 1880s-1900s

What is Post-Impressionism? Post-Impressionist paintings were a broad reaction against Impressionism. Used the bright Impressionist palette, but rejected the Impressionism’s emphasis on the spontaneous recording of light and color. Post-Impressionists sought to create art with a greater degree of formal order and structure.

Post-Impressionist compositions focused on the personal experience of the painter unlike Impressionism which focused on light and the finished product.

Characteristics: see brushstrokes personally expressive style over fidelity no fleeting light or moment (= multiple moments or angles) bright palette moved away from journalistic detail of earlier periods art is for the artist’s sake

Paul Cezanne Apples and Oranges

Paul Cezanne Mont Sainte-Victoire

Georges Seurat Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte

Vincent van Gogh The Starry Night

Vincent van Gogh Sunflowers

Vincent van Gogh Self-Portrait

Paul Gauguin Vision After the Sermon

Paul Gauguin Night Café at Arles

Henri Toulouse- Lautrec At the Moulin Rouge

Art Nouveau

What is Art Nouveau? Art Nouveau artists wanted to erase the distinction between major and minor arts. They aimed at unifying all arts, centering them around man and his life. Therefore architecture, which has a direct influence on man's life, was the central art on which every skill is naturally integrated. Architecture is seen as a total art; every detail, every object in or on the building is related to the whole. Other crafts/arts of the Art Nouveau period not related to building are placards and jewelry. But jewelry took women as its center.Art Nouveau artists
