Disasters NATURAL Cyclones Floods Drought Earthquakes Landslides MAN MADE Massacres Rail Plane Fires Terrorism Mining TWO TYPES OF DISASTERS

NATURAL DISASTERS “ Caused by nature. Humans have limited, if any, control ”

CYCLONES Typical for tropical climates, cyclones are a natural occurrence, developing over warm waters and breaking down as they cross land. Depending on their severity, cyclones can have a massive negative impact leaving a trail of destruction with damaging winds, flooding and cutting electricity.

Cyclone example CYCLONE LARRY See footage of Cyclone Larryfootage Source: YouTube (2012); USDA (2006) 20 March 2006 Category 4 system Made landfall at Innisfail in North QLD Approximately $1.5 billion dollars in damage

FLOODS Floods are are a natural disaster caused by heavy rainfall and/or the bursting of damns, rivers etc. Floods can be unpredictable, leaving little time for preparation, and as such can have a negative impact by destroying homes, cutting off electricity, contaminating water, cutting off roads and food supply.

Flood example December 2010 – January 2011 Death toll: 32 Cost: $1 billion  TRENDING: Read how Twitter helped with flood information Read QLD FLOODS See footage of Grantham floodsfootage Source: ABC News (2012); Fairfax Media (2012); Wikipedia (a) (2012)

MAN MADE DISASTERS “ Created and controlled by humans. Nature does not generally play a dominant role ”

MASSACRES Massacres generally involve the uneccessary slaughter of a number of people by one or more persons. As such it is a man made disaster.

Massacre example 28 April 1996 Port Arthur historical site Killer Martin Bryant opened fire in a mass killing spree Death toll: 32 people PORT ARTHUR MASSACRE  CONTROVERSY: Port Arthur in artart
