Stories of the Prophets- Prophet Yunus a.s.

Allah sent Prophet Yunus a.s to the people of Nineveh (Babylon) . The people of Nineveh worshipped idols. Prophet Yunus a.s. asked them to worship only one Allah, but they didn’t listen to him.

The people of Nineveh made fun of him. They said : You are a liar and we will NOT leave our forefathers gods. Prophet Yunus as became very sad and compalined to Allah.

Prophet Yunus a.s. warned his people about Allah’s punishment but they said : We do not care about your God nor do we believe in His punishment. Atlast Prophet Yunus a.s. was fed up with these stubborn people. He asked Allah swt to punish them and went away .

Prophet Yunus a.s. got on a small ship with some other passengers and sailed away. However, he made a terrible mistake. In his anger, he left Nineveh without waiting for Allah's permission to do so.

After his departure, the signs of Allah's punishment began to appear over Nineveh. Dark clouds appeared and there were signs of a big bad storm.

The people realized that soon they will be punished by Allah. A wise man amongst them advised them to repent and ask Allah to forgive them. All the people, young and old came out of their homes and asked Allah to forgive them. Allah listened to their prayers and His punishment was withdrawn.

Meanwhile, the ship in which Prophet Yunus a. s Meanwhile, the ship in which Prophet Yunus a.s. was sailing was caught in a storm. The captain suggested that one of the persons had to get off to save the ship from sinking.

To choose the name of the person who would leave the ship, the passengers cast lots. Not once but three times, Hazrat Yunus’s name was cast and he had to leave the ship. He was very scared. Now he realised his mistake of leaving Nineveh without the permission of Allah. But he trusted Allah and jumped into the sea.

Allah swt ordered a huge fish to swallow Hazrat Yunus a. s Allah swt ordered a huge fish to swallow Hazrat Yunus a.s. For days, he lay in its stomach frightened but unharmed!!! In that extreme darkness, he prayed to Allah for forgiveness.

Allah swt forgave him. The fish left him safely on the shore. Allah swt caused a plant to grow there whose leaves served as shade and whose fruits fed Hazrat Yunus a.s.

Soon he was ordered by Allah swt to return to Nineveh. When he went back, he was amazed to see that people had given up idol-worshipping and were worshipping Allah alone. His people welcomed him and he spent the rest of his life preaching them and guiding them to the right path.
