8 Theme Beginning: In the begging of the book I do believe that the theme of the book is war. Everything seems to be about war Mrs. Enright is worried and doesn’t want Phillip to go far from the house is because of the war, Phillip Might move because of the war. But then I started to see a new theme, anger. Phillip is angered at his mum because he had to leave the island and move back to the USA, he is angered at that because he is leaving all his friends behind, even his childhood. Once he moves something terrible happens.

9 Middle: Phillip and his mum were shot down by a torpedo, Phillip wakes up on a island with a person he has never met before his mum is somewhere safe, hopefully. Phillip met a strange man, he is tough, big, and old. Phillip’s description is “I saw a very old Negro, he was ugly. His nose was flat and his face was broad.” Most of the middle was full of anger. Phillip’s mum told him that black people were not the same, that was a sign of prejudice. Phillip had a head injury and Timothy (The black man Phillip described.) helped Phillip to get healed, it didn’t work… Phillip went blind from staring at the sea water, Timothy warned him about that.

10 End (Now): Phillip and Timothy have become closer to friends and not fighting as much as they used to. Timothy is helping Phillip get used to his blindness and Phillip is doing the best he can to learn. Timothy made a huge rock sign that said “Help”, Timothy asked if Phillip could help him spell it and Phillip found out that Timothy has spelled it wrong and helped him, Phillip felt more powerful. Timothy soon accuses Stew Cat of being “Bad luck.” Timothy became very ill from Marla, and Phillip must help him to his aid.
