What Makes a Neighbourhood? "Neighbourhood" is a term used to refer to a part or a quarter in a city. In a big city, there may be several or more neighbourhoods. But how come a part of a city is regarded as a neighbourhood? An area is regarded as a neighbourhood not merely because buildings cluster in it. There are more important reasons. That is, people living within a neighbourhood are often similar in many social features such as household income, profession and occupation, educational background, and others. That's why there are terms like middle-class neighbourhood, lower-class neighbourhood, and upper-class neighbourhood, industrial neighbourhood, etc.householdoccupation In the United States, neighbourhood is more like an indication of racial, ethnic and class division. Here is a table which shows the result of a 1994 neighbourhood survey in an American city (quoted from Keller-Olaman (2004)):survey

Neighbourhood in Western Countries Neighbourhood plays an important role in societies of western countries. It is so important that various researches have been conducted on this topic. In western countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and some other European countries, people are studying the effect of neighbourhood on mental health, education, children development, business, life satisfaction, etc. They also study the relationship between neighbourhood and social network.topicrelationshipnetwork In western countries, people enjoy an active participation in neighbourhood activities. They produce neighbourhood profiles to help the establishment and development of neighbourhood. They also organise different clubs and associations where people from different families can do something together. They have neighbourhood football club, neighbourhood bridge club, neighbourhood children club, neighbourhood elderly centre, etc. These organisations and activities are often supported by funds granted by local government. Some are also supported by private companies.local

Neighbourhood Watch Neighbourhood Watch is an activity carried out to prevent crimes within neighbourhood. People believe that by taking action together they can reduce crimes in a local area. Members in the Neighbourhood Watch Team are generally volunteers. Some of them are adults. Some are elder children. Some are old people. They cooperate with police to fight against crimes such as theft, car crime, family abuse, burglary, etc. Actually Neighbourhood Watch is considered to be quite successful in dealing with local crimes.local
