Sports News ?id=550885

Before you write a sports story: You must know the sport (rules, jargon/ terminology, players, coaches, rivalries). Sports are often human interest – feelings, mood and tone matter. What are the types of sports stories? – Pre-game – Game – Post-game

Pre-game The pre-game and post-game stories are often on TV before the newspaper can print anything, so the pre-game is where the written story does its best work. Think news story. What goes into the story? – History, rivalries – Physical condition of the team – Starting line-ups – Comparison of each team’s record – Comments on styles of play – Significance of the game (world championship?) – Analysis of individual Pre-game article: Interview both competitors. Look for a “story” Preview the game Minimum 300 words. Due by the end of class on Thursday!!!

Game The true test of the sports writer – you must have detailed notes about plays and action. – Have a note-taking system – Turning points, critical plays – Points scored, by whom – Sidelines, officials, and crowd reactions BE OBJECTIVE!

Post-Game Feature story Include the following – Interviews (players, coaches, officials & fans) – Season/ game/ series wrap up stories – “Color Stories” (analysis of confusing events and calls or interpretations of rules by officials).

You will write TWO sports stories based on an in-class paper football game. Two people will play each other while the other two report/take notes and prepare a story to write for this assignment. TWO STORIES PER PERSON Conduct pregame interviews between competing players and write a pre-game story. Begin the game –journalists on the sidelines should take notes while the game is being played (significant events, players actions, conflicts and calls, mood, etc.) Sports Journalism Assignment

Sports Journalism Assignment Criteria Game/Post Game Article - At least 500 words. Must have a post game analysis/interview etc. Each article must have a title that will catch an audiences attention. Use the terminology of the game and make sure you know and possibly include the rules in your article. Remember this is a sports article so make sure it is exciting and keeping your audiences attention throughout the whole article. Pre-Game Article due – THURSDAY. Games will be played FRIDAY. Game/Post-Game ARTICLE due WEDNESDAY, 5/20

5/12 Aim: How can we conduct pre-game interviews? Do Now: How is sports journalism different from regular news reporting? HW: Pre-game story due Thursday!

Rules of paper football You will play two 4 minute halves. Each half starts with a kickoff -wherever the football lands is where the opposing player starts with the football If any part of the football is hanging off of the table on the kickoff, the kicking team is rewarded 6 points. No “wind” rule. A touchdown is awarded when the offensive player flicks the football three times or less and the football is still on the table hanging over the edge. ( 3 flicks each)

Rules of paper football If an offensive player flicks the football off the table three times in a row, the opposing player will get the opportunity to kick a field goal. If the player makes the field goal, he/she is awarded 3 points. Point after touchdown- The defensive player holds his/her fingers up like a goal post and the offensive player gets to flick the football through. Two Point conversion- Offensive player gets one flick from the middle of the field to get a touchdown.

Point System -TD’s=6 points -Field Goal- 3 points -Extra Point=1 point -Conversion=2 points
