Cartilaginous vs. Bonyfish Cartilaginous Class chondrichthyes Flexible skeleton made entirely of cartilage Examples: Sharks and Rays
Cartilaginous vs. Bony Fish Cont. Bony Fish Class osteichthyes Skeleton obtain hardened compounds Have a two-chambered heart. Examples: Salmon, trout, tuna
Amphibians
Vertebrate or invertebrate? Amphibians are Tetrapods. Tetrapods are the 1 st vertebrates with adaptations for living on land.
Ancestors of Amphibians Before amphibians resembled the frogs and salamanders of today there were other 4-limbed ancestors that were fully aquatic and more like fish with sturdy legs.
General Characteristics: Skin Heart Metamorphosis
Skin: The smooth skin of adult amphibians is generally moist and often serves to supplement their lungs for gas exchange. Usually had mucous glands as well as poison glands that often play a role in defense against predators.
Heart: One chamber (The Ventricle) – pumps blood away from the heart. The other two chambers (The Atria) – collect blood that is returning to the heart.
Metamorphosis: Complete change of body form in some animals from a larva to an adult.
