Colonel James Williams Test screens, crude content

Colonel James Williams removed some valuables from his South Carolina home to Caswell County North Carolina before assaults from the Red Coats and Tory militia. He gathered a regiment of new North Carolina troops and remnants of South Carolina refugees. They joined the overmountain volunteers at Cowpens and formed a column of about 225 in the ovenight march across Cherokee Ford. His rag tag corps occupied a quadrant encircling Kings Mountain where on 07Oct1780 Patrick Ferguson’s force was wiped off the face of the earth. Williams made the maximum sacrifice of his life. All testimony from eye witnesses applauded his contribution and mourned his loss.

Disputes over “who shot Patrick” who was bravest, who was cowardly, how many, which county gave the most, and other details overshadowed The Historic accounts of the Battle of Kings Mountain and of James Williams’ corps. Colonel William Campbell died un untimely death after which some claimed his glory and rumored his cowardice. Colonel Williams died on the field and Could no longer defend himself.
