Dr. Mortimer A doctor who specializes in nerves Asks Holmes for help in investigating Sir Henry Baskerville A small, alert, dark eyed man that is about 30 years of age Descendant of Hugo Baskerville Watson Holmes’ sidekick He looks up to Holmes Narrator of the story Cartwright A boy who helped with an investigation in a previous Holmes story and he is going to help them by collecting newspapers that have cut out sections.

Purpose/ Events: Holmes gets a chance to talk to Sir Henry Baskerville. Holmes gets a chance to really look at the letter. Introducing the letter and the legend of the Baskervilles. PURPOSE: introducing the letter

Clues The letter with cutout words from the Times (a warning) Stolen shoes Suspicious taxi man

The detective must be memorable Detective Elements The detective must be memorable In this chapter Holmes is memorable because he notices things in objects that other people cant see. Examples: As Holmes observes the letter with the cut out words he notices what kind of scissor was used. (page 36) With the written part of the letter used with pen ink Holmes can see that the writer was having trouble because the pen had spluttered its ink about ever two words. By seeing that Holmes concludes with that there was very little ink left in the bottle. (page 37)

Quotes Sir Henry Baskerville gets a mysterious letter it reads “As you value your life or your reason keep away from the moor” moor was the only one printed the others cut out. “Nail scissors,” said Holmes. “you can see that it was a very short bladed scissors, since the cutter had to take two snips over ‘keep away’.” “…the Times is a paper which is seldom found in any hands but those of the highly educated.” Holmes “Now, you would call it a guess, no doubt, but I am almost certain that this address has been written in an hotel.” Holmes
