Recycling

What is recycling?

Recycling means taking materials from products you have finished using and making brand new products with them.

What are the 3R’s of recycling?

Always remember the 3 R‘s Reduce Always think about what you are throwing away! Would someone else like what you are throwing away? Would a charity shop benefit from the item? Why don't you make your own gifts and cards for your family and friends - they'll prefer the personal touch! Reuse Reusing things can delay or avoid something being thrown away You can reuse paper that has been used on one side as a notepad or for drawings. Some items you may be able to take into school to use for arts and crafts. Recycle If you cannot reduce or reuse your waste put it in your blue box or take it to a recycling bank near where you live.

What materials can we recycle?

Why is it important to recycle? Not only can recycling help the environment, but we can all benefit from recycling things from around the house, at work and during our leisure time.

Why is it important to recycle? Recycling Conserves Resources When we recycle, used materials are converted into new products, reducing the need to consume natural resources. If used materials are not recycled, new products are made by extracting fresh, raw material from the Earth, through mining and forestry. Recycling helps conserve important raw materials and protects natural habitats for the future.

Why is it important to recycle? Recycling saves energy Using recycled materials in the manufacturing process uses considerably less energy than that required for producing new products from raw materials – even when comparing all associated costs including transport etc. Plus there are extra energy savings because more energy is required to extract, refine, transport and process raw materials ready for industry compared with providing industry-ready materials.

Why is it important to recycle? Recycling helps protect the environment Recycling reduces the need for extracting (mining, quarrying and logging), refining and processing raw materials all of which create substantial air and water pollution. As recycling saves energy it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to tackle climate change. Current UK recycling is estimated to save more than 18 million tonnes of C02 a year – the equivalent to taking 5 million cars off the road.

Why is it important to recycle? Recycling reduces landfill When we recycle, recyclable materials are reprocessed into new products, and as a result the amount of rubbish sent to landfill sites reduces. There are over 1,500 landfill sites in the UK, and in 2001, these sites produced a quarter of the UK’s emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

How is paper, glass and aluminium recycled?

How to save energy? game_energy.htm tgame.html Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment. Did you know that: 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours. 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes. 1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials. Some Interesting Facts Up to 60% of the rubbish that ends up in the dustbin could be recycled. The unreleased energy contained in the average dustbin each year could power a television for 5,000 hours. The largest lake in the Britain could be filled with rubbish from the UK in 8 months. On average, 16% of the money you spend on a product pays for the packaging, which ultimately ends up as rubbish. As much as 50% of waste in the average dustbin could be composted. Up to 80% of a vehicle can be recycled. 9 out of 10 people would recycle more if it were made easier.
