Gather The Lord be with you And also with you

Receive The fields of the poor may produce abundant food, but injustice sweeps it away. Proverbs 13: 23 Fair Trade is about bringing justice through food. Fair Trade gives farmers a fair income for their work.

Engage How much is your education worth?

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. It is landlocked, densely populated, has limited natural resources, suffers from severe environmental degradation and is being ravaged by HIV/AIDS. However, unlike many other developing countries, Malawi is a functioning multi-party democracy with strong civil society institutions, a free press and a tradition of peace.

Education is one of the most effective ways to escape poverty but there are tremendous problems to overcome. With a very high student-teacher ratio, lack of equipment, and language difficulties. Secondary education is not free and as a result only 30% of children receive a high school education.

If a farmer in Malawi can sell 90kg of rice at a fair price they would have sufficient income to send one of their children to High School for a year.

We have 90kg of rice to sell. Each kilo bag costs £2.99 which is a fair price for the Malawian farmers.

Our Fair Trade Rice Challenge is to sell 2 bags of rice per class and make as much money as possible. Every class needs to aim to make at least £5.98 to pay a fair price for the rice.

Get Competitive Which class can make the most money? What innovative ideas do you have to sell the rice?

Respond Tilt the scales, O God of the mustard seed: That the poor shall see justice. Share the feast, O God of Eden’s abundant garden: That each crop may fetch a fair price. Upset the tables, O God of the upside-down Kingdom: That the least can benefit from their trade. Open our eyes, O God of life in all its fullness: That we may learn to walk the way of your son tilting, sharing, upsetting this world Not satisfied until the products we bring to our table Give a better deal, to all who hunger for one. In His name, Amen. The FairTrade Foundation

Go May the light of Christ our Lord shine in all our hearts. Amen
