5. Engage
The Battle of the Somme, fought in northern France, was one of the bloodiest of World War One. For five months the British and French armies engaged the Germans in a brutal battle of attrition on a 15-mile front.
Events that happened around the UK on 1st July 2016 remembered the first day of the battle.

6. Engage Some discussion ideas … When is it right to go to war?
What emotions do you think the soldiers may have experienced as they waiting for the whistle (7.30am, 1st July 1916) that would mark the beginning of the battle?
Activity suggestion …
Together – write a manifesto for peace. What must nations do in order to live peacefully.
