6/1/20161 A QUESTION OF AUTHORITY Part 3

6/1/20162 A QUESTION OF AUTHORITY 1) THE SOURCE OF AUTHORITY: GOD SPEAKING THROUGH THE CHRIST. A. Hebrews 1:1-2 New Testament message and messenger contrasted with Old.

6/1/20163 At many moments in the past and by many means, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets; but in these last days has spoken to us through His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. Hebrews 1:1

6/1/20164 John 1:17 Though the law was given through Moses, gracious love and truth have come through Jesus Christ. B. John 1:17 Moses the Law giver in Old Testament period, Christ giver of Grace and truth in the Christian age. C. Matthew 11:27 God revealed through Christ.

6/1/20165 Everything has been entrusted to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him. Matthew 11:27

6/1/20166 A QUESTION OF AUTHORITY 1) THE SOURCE OF AUTHORITY: GOD SPEAKING THROUGH THE CHRIST. D. John 5:26-27 Authority given to Christ. "For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; John 5:26

6/1/20167 For I have passed on to them the commands you gave me; and they accepted them and know of a certainty that I came down to earth from you, and they believe you sent me. John 17:8. E. John 17:6-15 Christ's message from God. John 12:48-50 F. John 14:10-11 Christ challenges us to believe the evidence

6/1/20168 Don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I say are not my own but are from my Father who lives in me. And he does his work through me. Just believe it--that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or else believe it because of the mighty miracles you have seen me do. John 14:10

6/1/ ) THE AUTHORITY OF THE BIBLE A. Mark 9:2-8; Acts 3:19-23 “Listen to Him"

6/1/ Jesus went on to say to His disciples, ``Some of you who are standing here right now will live to see the Kingdom of God arrive in great power!‘’ Six days later Jesus took Peter, James and John to the top of a mountain. No one else was there. Suddenly His face began to shine with glory, and His clothing became dazzling white, far more glorious than any earthly process could ever make it! Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus! ``Teacher, this is wonderful!'' Peter exclaimed. ``We will make three shelters here, one for each of you. ‘’ He said this just to be talking, for he didn't know what else to say and they were all terribly frightened. But while he was still speaking these words, a cloud covered them, blotting out the sun, and a voice from the cloud said, ``This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him.‘’ Then suddenly they looked around and Moses and Elijah were gone, and only Jesus was with them.

6/1/ B. Matthew 5:21-22; 5:27-28; "But I say unto you ``Under the laws of Moses the rule was, `If you murder, you must die.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be punished. Anyone who says `You idiot!' to his brother must answer to the Jewish Council. Anyone who says, `You fool!' will be punished in hell fire. Matthew 5:21

6/1/ C. 1 Corinthians 9:21; "Under law to Christ". I obey no special rules for the good of non-Jewish people. This doesn't mean that I am free from God's law; I am within Christ's law! I am only trying to win non-Jewish people. 1 Corinthians 9:21

6/1/ A QUESTION OF AUTHORITY D. CHRIST'S AUTHORITY TO BE EXECUTED THROUGH HIS APOSTLES. This Authority was delegated to the apostles of Christ under the New Covenant. Only a limited administrative authority was given to them. 1. Matthew 16:13-20;18:18; 19:27-28; 28:19-20; Mark 16:17-19;

6/1/ Matthew 16:16 Then Simon Peter spoke up and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Matthew 16:18 ``Upon this rock foundation,'' Jesus answered, ``I will build my community--those called out by God. Death will not overpower them. Blessed are you, Simon, son of John. My Father in heaven, not man, showed that to you.

6/1/ "Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven. Matthew 18:18

6/1/ Matthew 28:19 “Therefore, after you've gone out, make followers from all nations. Immerse them by the authority of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:20 and then teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you; and be sure of this--that I am with you always, even to the end of the world.''

6/1/ A QUESTION OF AUTHORITY D. CHRIST'S AUTHORITY TO BE EXECUTED THROUGH HIS APOSTLES. This Authority was delegated to the apostles of Christ under the New Covenant. Only a limited administrative authority was given to them. 1. Matthew 16:13-20; 19:27-28; 28:19-20; Mark 16: John 20:21-23

6/1/ “He spoke to them again and said, ``As the Father has sent Me, even so I am sending you.'‘ Then He breathed on them and told them, ``Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven. If you refuse to forgive them, they are unforgiven.'' John 20:21-23

1. Matthew 16:13-20; 19:27-28; 28:19-20; Mark 16:17-19; 2. John 20:22-23;. 1 Corinthians 9:21; 3. "under law to Christ"

6/1/ “I obey no special rules for the good of non- Jewish people. This doesn't mean that I am free from God's law; I am within Christ's law! I am only trying to win non-Jewish people”. 1 Corinthians 9:21

6/1/ Matthew 16:13-20; 19:27-28; 28:19-20; Mark 16:17-19; 2. John 20: Corinthians 9:21; "under law to Christ" 4. 1 John 4:6; We can tell the difference between truth and error, by testing if we are obeying what they taught or ignoring what they say.

6/1/ We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 1 John 4:6

6/1/ A QUESTION OF AUTHORITY E. APOSTLES TO BE GUIDED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT. This final authority granted to Jesus Christ was delegated to the apostles so that the world could know the will of God. Jesus delegated to the apostles the authority to bind and loose. However, the apostles could only bind and loose on earth what had already been bound and loosed within the will of God. (Matthew 16:19)

6/1/ When Jesus left this world, He sent the Holy Spirit to aid the apostles in their recollection and knowledge of what was to be bound and loosed. Consider!

6/1/ John 14:16-17; And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be for ever with you - the Spirit of truth Because of human weakness, it was necessary that this delegation of authority be accompanied by the Holy Spirit.

6/1/ John 14:25-26: “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” (NKJV, cf. John 16:12-15)

6/1/ John 16:7-15; (13) When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting His own ideas; He will be telling you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future.

6/1/ Luke 24:49 "And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven."

6/1/ Acts 2:1-4; 37-38; Acts 2:37+38 When the people heard this, they felt a sharp, cutting pain in their conscience. They asked Peter and the other apostles, ``What should we do, brothers?'‘ Then Peter answered, ``Change your hearts and each one of you must be immersed by the authority of Jesus the Messiah, so that your sins may be forgiven. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
